IT Gets Out of Black Hole and into Spotlight as Business Enabler
How does IT add value to a business? Increaingly, managers and executives are more aware of how IT impacts their business. Employees have become more familiar with IT's deliverable benefits. As a result, it's seen less and less as a "black hole", where resources go in to a place where invisible IT experts handle arcane technologies. These days, IT is front-of-mind as a key ingredient in helping keep companies productive and streamlined.
“Obviously, IT is just a fact of life nowadays," says Highland Foundry Senior Vice President
and Chief Financial Officer
(CFO)
Bob Crone. "It’s a necessary evil in some sense. If we didn't have modern technologies, that would make day-to-day operations.
For instance, using Lotus Notes is a staple in our business. We use it for email, organizing work in teamrooms, calendars, scheduling meetings, showing how we use our time and more. We've actually evolved our business to the point of not being able to function without IT."
Owners and employees in a wide range of industries recognize the value of technology that not only allows them to improve their business -- without IT, many of today's businesses couldn't offer their basic business services
“IT is very integral to our business,” says Marketwire client relations manager Gus Fosarolli. “Without them, we just wouldn’t function. From tech support for incidents to website functionality, IT enables the core of our business.” He notes that collaboration tools IT support, including a company web portal, allow for some employees to work from remote locations, or even from home.
This renewed enthusiasm and understanding for IT's benefits for business may well be reflected in increased IT spending in the rest of 2009, noted National Computing Centre representative Mike Dean (iHotDesk). He suggests that a temporary slowdown in IT spending earlier in the year will soon be reversed, as businesses ratchet-up their business-enabling IT projects in preparation for the eventual economic upswing.
